Our worldly, linear, faithless perspective is so lacking sometimes. We ask God to do things like “heal me from this addiction”, “help me not want to have this desire”, “change the way i think about such and such”.
I don’t think it is unfair of us to ask God to heal and help. We are supposed to ask for those things, he desires for us to live righteously and does have the ability to heal anything we ask.
But it is so redundant.
Like asking to be let out of a locked car.
God has set us free from the power of sin. To ask him to set us free from our sin is asking him to do something that has already been done. The power of the life-giving spirit, the Holy Spirit, has set us free from the power of sin. Think about it, God sent his son, who died for our sins, yeah, but he also set us free from living in sin. Read about it, Rom 8.
We think, “oh i struggle with this, how do i overcome it? I need God to heal me.” We pray harder and try harder. We respond to alter calls and read our bible more. God already has healed you! We have to stop trying to get him to heal us again. He did it 2,000 years ago. We just have to claim the victory we already have in Jesus. It is up to us now whether we let our addictions, habits, thoughts control us.
Please don’t think I am making light of this. Like, “wow you struggle with lust, drugs, depression? Come on, it’s so easy to get out of.” I know it’s not easy when we try to change ourselves. I am only saying that sometimes we miss the point. Our worldly, linear, faithless perspective of healing is so lacking sometimes. Sometimes we think the door actually does lock from the inside and we need someone outside the car, something out of our control to happen before we can get out. We aren’t victims anymore. We aren’t helpless and waiting.
Little kids don’t understand that they aren’t actually locked inside of a car. They don’t understand that they have the ability to get out. They have already been given the key. They have already been set free. We must not be like kids in the way we look at our struggles. We must not be ignorant of the significance of what Jesus did. Sometimes it takes Gods help to direct us to where the lock is before we get out of the car. Sometimes we need him to show us how it unlocks, the details of how to get out. But we already have everything we need, it has already been given to us. This world is dark. Unlocking a car door in the dark can be hard to do. There are other forces trying to keep us in. Working against us. But the victory is already won. The key is in our hands now. God will direct you, God is the light you need, you must claim the victory that is already yours.
Even when we are out of our sin there might be times when we get back in the car, but we can’t live there. We know the way out. We no longer have an excuse to stay locked up when freedom has been given to us.
Asking God to heal us of our sinful nature is to ask for something that has already been given to us, we just need to receive it.
God declared an end to sin’s control over us.
And when God declares something he doesn’t change his mind, it’s not a weak suggestion, it is truth.
The truth is that God has declared an end to sin’s control over us through the death of his son and it is our freedom to take. Maybe we need to declare a few things over ourselves in the name of Jesus through faith.
8:12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. 13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.
in other words, you don’t have to act or think the way you do now. if you do you’re gonna die but with the power of the Holy Spirit get free from that so you can live.
p.s. i’m not trying to be condemning or harsh. only encouraging. i am mostly writing this to myself. if it offends you message me.
